new user please help

im a new user with stupid questions and have had conflicting and confusing info from everyone i ask
1 do i need certain cd/dvd discs to download from my computer +/- r/rw what difference do they make my computer has a sticker saying optical drive- dvd+/-rw
2 what sites should i be looking at for downloads, should i be paying a one off fee to the site and how will i know if they are legal
3 once i find a site to use how do i know if it is compatable with my computer (windows vista)
sorry for these dumb questions and the many more i am sure i will be asking

1) Your drive is able to read DVD+ and DVD- and be able to write to these discs too.
2) Genuine sites will either be rental firms like Blockbuster, iTunes or movie studios like Warner Brothers Columbia etc. - These will be subscription based.
3) Downloading movies won't be OS dependent.
