Windows Media Player 9 Track Recognition help please??

Hello folks, I wonder if you can help? I store lots of music on media 9, make up own playlists & cds etc etc with all track details be they from Windows recognition of a cd or my own listing details. My problem is that when I copy a playlist with all track details etc & give to a friend etc the tracks aren't recognised on their media player nor on my Vista laptop?? Is there anyway round this? I rip tracks in wma lossless, should I do them as MP3s in future, will that help? tho I do like wma lossless to be honest.
Many thanks,
Steve

Re: Windows Media Player 9 Track Recognition help please??

A play list is just that, a list. It's like a list of CD/tracks on your shelf, setting out where on the shelf the tracks are located.

You can give the list to your friend but it will bear no relation to what's on the shelf at their house, they would have to come to your house and get the track off your shelf to listen to them.

Even if you take the list into another room in your own house (your laptop) the list is meaningless.

Ok, thanks for the advice. I thought that, like bought cds that have recognised track listings etc that there may be a way of doing the same.....I'm told that you can with MP3s but don't know. Thanks anyway.

I'm not sure we understand each other... Do you want to try again and set out what the issue is?

Re: Windows Media Player 9 Track Recognition help please??

I think I do you but maybe you not me lol:
If I were to copy a purchased cd, all the info ( artist, track etc ) comes up on media player, if i copy that cd ( which of course i dont due to copyright laws!!! ) the info would also come up on the copied disc when played on another computer/media player etc.
When I copy tracks from purchased cds ( with all info intact ) & then put individual tracks into a playlist of my taste & burn tjhose tracks to disc......those individual track infos still come up when i put that cd into the computer that burnt the cd BUT not my laptop ( which admittedly is Vista and henceforth a later Media Player ) nor any friends computers when I play the cd on their computers. Clearer?
Thanks, Steve

Re: Windows Media Player 9 Track Recognition help please??

Ah, right.

CD & track recognition, as you know, is done through a central online db which recognises a commercial CDs unique serial number (not the tracks on it, per se). Therefore a 'mix' CD of your creation won't be on that central db, only official releases are automatically added (although some do allow 'variations' to be edited).

Furthermore, if the 'mix' CD was created as an MP3 CD (or WMA) then the track info would be embedded in the file, but it doesn't work if the CD is burned for playing in a domestic CD player.

As such, associated playlists will only work on the same machine they were created on (in relation to the location of any files/folders or discs/drives on the playlist) and the track info will only be available with MP3/WMA files.

However, if I were to rip 10 different CDs and save the MP3 files (with track info) into 10 corresponding folders (and those 10 folders in a 'root' folder), I could create various playlists (selections of tracks from the 10 discs) saving them in the 'root' folder.

I could then copy to an MP3 player, or burn an MP3 disc (for personal use ), all the folders from the 'root' down (including the 10 CD folders, and the playlists). As the playlists are still in position - relative to the 10 folders and tracks therein - the playlist would still be functional. And, as the files are MP3/WMA the track data is also available.
