Windows Media Player 11 keeps crashing.

Hi,
Im having trouble with windows Media player 11, I am using windows XP.
but everytime i try to play a video on the net it crashes.
sometimes i get sound with no picture, but most of the time i get no sound or picture.
whatever i get the computer crashes.
your assistance would be appreciated.
