Drive will not reconise dvdrw, dvd-r or dvd+r

Hi
A friend is having a problem with his dvd rw drive. When he puts in a blank dvd+rw to burn something off the drive will only reconise it as a cd r. The drive will play recorded dvds and load them up as well as recorded cds. The only problem seems to be with dvdrw, dvd-r and dvd+r discs.
Is there anything within the settings that could have been adjusted?
The drive is a Philips pbdv1640p.
