how do i stop the windows mini player appearing when i click on minimize

I presume you are talking about Windows Media Player 11. If so, as far as I can tell you cannot keep WMP running in the background without having the Mini Player sitting in the task bar unless you right click on task bar, choose Toolbars and remove the tick from Windows Media Player.
