Twixt the devil and the deep blue sea!

Continuing the saga of no microphone configuration on my Asus Barebones Pundit PC with the old Avance AC'97 sound driver, I am now thinking along the lines of purchasing a new and seperate PCI sound card (Soundblaster for example).
There are 2 PCI slots available, do I merely fit the card and use the supplied CD-rom or is it necessary to disable the inbuilt sound card in the motherboard?
If this is so, how do I go about disabling such?
Any ideas would be welcomed, I am suffering withdrawal symptoms!

Onboard sound normally needs to be disabled to start using a separate Sound Card (or used to be when I last looked at a motherboard manual, a few years ago now). It was a jumper that needed to be set a certain way, and it was the motherboard manual that told me where and how. Without it I wouldn't know. Did you get a manual for this machine?

Thankyou for your reply, yes, I have got a manual for the machine and looking through it, quite frankly it terrifies me with the verbage, I assume that it is designed for those with a certain knowledge of computer internals! Most of the abbreviations are unknown quantities!
I think that I will have to employ someone to work on it, I am sure that if I start bumbling my way through the PC workings I shall do something that is irreparable!

I know what you mean. If it's not terrible translations in to nonsense english, it's written by someone who makes assumptions about the reader's knowledge, or it's just plain badly designed and there's no index of features and you have to go through it with a fine tooth comb to locate any detail referring to that you're interested in.
Manuals are usually terrible.
You might be as well to give it to someone else to do the job, touching the wrng things inside a PC could do damage, you ought to be earthed, and you should use the correct tools, and in some cases, you have to take a lot of the machine out to get to the bit you want to work on.
Infernal bloody machines. Who'd have them?
