where and how missing codecs???

I have periodically played a video on real player or wmp and have vision but no sound and it says it requires a certain codec to play the audio, less often it will happen the other way sound but no vision. Can Anyone help me with this? where are these codecs found and how are they used? Many Thanks in advance...

There are free codec sets like the one the poster has put you in the direction of, but there are certain files that I suspect use specific Codecs to protect the files, that is, you must pay for their codecs to view them.
I could easily be wrong, but that is how it looked to me.
