JPEG file sizes

I have recently developed a film and had the photos also put onto CD-Rom so that I can easily email them to friends. I have done this previously without problems, however this time the file sizes seem to be much larger, some more than 2MB. Previously Im sure the sizes were usualy only a couple of hundred KB. Is it possible that some settings on my computer have changed and are causing this? (I recently had to reinstall Win 98, and also added Macromedia Studio), or are the photo labs simply making the photos with larger files now?

Re: JPEG file sizes

With JPEG's the files can be compressed to different amounts. It sounds as though these just haven't been compressed.

Open a photo in your image editing program and you'll be able to compress the file to whatever degree you want. Obviously the more you compress the quality will drop off. It's a matter of finding a happy medium between quality and file size.

Re: JPEG file sizes

Hi Jared,

Some labs create 2 versions of each image; a full scan hi-res image and a lower res thumbnail - these are often in seperate folders.

However, if your emailed images are to be viewed on the recipients monitor - as opposed to being printed - you can edit the image and reduce the resolution to 72 ppi (pixels per inch) and then resize the image so that, at 100%, it is no bigger than the screen to be viewed on (i.e. 800x600, 1024x768, etc.).

This should reduce any substantial file to something more emailable.
