converting video to a windows known program

I have some footage that i have taken with my dvd camcorder I have finalised the disc and I want to split the footage up using windows moviemaker,however moviemaker does not recognise the format. How do i change the format to mpeg 4 or another program that windows moviemaker recognises?

I don't think it will recognise mpeg-4 ,i have been trying to convert my cam phone video into something it will recognise today with no luck.

Theres a free one here but i couldn't get it to convert the audio.
