Onspeed - great value ?

I've just been sent an ad for the company below , is it as it seems just too good to be true ?

Very cheap and very quick , the ultimate solution ?

Re: Onspeed - great value ?

it is great value as long as you know it does not speed up downloads and only web browsing.

Re: Onspeed - great value ?

It works ive used it on my mothers pc, dont expect a speed boost when d/loading ( as the post above says) but @ £25 per year its a steal.

Re: Onspeed - great value ?

I've thought of getting this, but haven't done so. I almost always get connection speeds of 40-44Kbps, if I don't, I disconnect and re-dial. I was told it wasn't really worth paying for On Speed with these speeds, web pages only take a couple of seconds to appear anyway. If I had cosistently low speeds, then I would definitely get it. I've heard mostly good reports about it.

Why not, Jaynee? I probably should get a grip, but why in this case? I'm easily confused, you know!

Re: Onspeed - great value ?

My uncle just got it ... his connection was 44kbps ... and moved up to 48kbps ...

It's a bit pointless ... but is definately better than nothing.

Re: Onspeed - great value ?

I don't know that it's worth £25 a year for a relatively small increase in speed. I have to watch the pennies a bit.

Re: Onspeed - great value ?

George its not the connection speed its the compression that speeds it up.

As i said my mothers connection is approx 3 to 5 times faster with the image setting to low quality.

Note - it will not inprove your download speeds but they are working on this.

In reply to:

In reply to:What types of content does ONSPEED speed up?

ONSPEED significantly speeds up web page access. To achieve this speed up, proprietary lossless compression is applied to text, html, xml, javascript and style sheets. Proprietary image compression is applied to gif images, jpeg images and Flash content.

ONSPEED also accelerates email traffic (POP3 and SMTP)using lossless compression.

ONSPEED does NOT speed up file downloads (over FTP or file sharing programs), streaming audio/video and HTTPS (secure web sites).

Re: Onspeed - great value ?

It will not be possible for Onspeed to improve download speed no matter what thay might try. A dial-up connection is made through a pair of copper wires running into your home. Using a normal modem and an analogue signal there is an absolute theoretical limit of 56k on the bandwidth available. That translates to a realistic limit of around 52k. The only way to improve that speed is to convert the signal to digital and squirt it down the line at higher speeds, in other words ADSL.

Re: Onspeed - great value ?

When I saw the Onspeed advert. I thought snake oil. I was wrong.

My mother uses the www for e-mail and web shopping.

Using Onspeed compression has improved the response dramatically.
More than I thought it would.
The trial has proven to be a success.

If you are a PAYG dial-up user: count up the saving of your time on-line against the annual cost of Onspeed. No, I have no association with Onspeed.

If you require a lot of downloads it will not improve the download time.
