Internet access in Africa - satphone?

Hello. I need help (boy do I need help!). I help run a charity and they're doing a charity drive from Birmingham (UK) to Banjul in the Gambia at the end of October. I need to be able to keep in touch with the four drivers as they go through Mauritania, Morocco, Sahara, Senegal and Gambia. I've looked at Sat Phones but, to be honest, it could all be in Greek as far as I'm concerned. What do we need?

I need to be able to talk to them, wherever they are, in case they get into difficulties. They need to send me photographs and possibly short video clips, as well as emails to let me know how they're getting on. I'll be updating their online diary. How on EARTH do I do that?

If anyone can help I'd be so grateful. I don't know where to start!

You'll be talking BIG money if you want two way communication via a satellite link with full video and photo capability. Have a look at this as an example. If you click on the link 'Things you should know....' you will see that what you probably need is the large antenna version which will be even more expensive. Are you really sure that a charity wants to spend that sort of money?

Thanks for that, Greyst. They do seem a bit expensive! In view of the cost and the fact that the drivers aren't very technology minded, I think we may have to resort to carrier pigeons.

If you can live with a simple mobile phone you can hire them for as low as a pound a day from here. I think the up front deposit may be a bit heavy, though.
