PC100 RAM sounds like the right type for the age of your machine. The problem you have sounds like you're trying to add ECC RAM when the computer takes the NON-ECC type or vice verse. This is what you need to check out.
If you can't get hold of the right kind from a local shop try eBay, loads going cheap on there.
P.S. The goal with the token meter is to top it up before it goes off not after
