Display settings troubles on ME

Please help. (Windows ME)
After an all-clear from HJT, my display setting refuse to change from large, Safe-mode type appearance. I've tried altering the setting (colour / size etc) within "Properties", along with the recommended reboot, with no luck.I've even tried to "restore" to an earlier point, but get an "unable" notice.
