Memory Stick Vista to older PC excel file

I am having issues transferring files from Vista excel (.xls) on Laptop to older edition desktop computer via Flash Drive / Thumb Stick / Memory Stick.... I can see the files on the Vista laptop in the Memory Stick... however, when transferring files to the older edition desktop the files are listed as XLS and unreadable... Also the icon is no longer excel icon...
Please help!
