Scrap Vista and return to XP?

Really struggle with Vista. Have tried for about 4 months to get used to it. Hate with a passion the Windows media section. Cannot get used to it
I am all for taking Vista off and reinstalling XP - what (if any) is the argument against doing this
One friend said Vista comes with lots of protection - firewalls etc that I don't know anything about and I would need to get installed on XP. is this a factor?
Your comments/thoughts/opinions would be very helpful
