I agree with Burr - dual-boot systems are for experts and certainly wouldn't solve your problem anyway. Which programmes are you trying to get working and what error message do you get (if any) when you try to run them?
As for the C: and D: drives, no you haven't got two hard disks, just one with 2 partitions. And no, you can't delete the Recovery file. It's put there by Hewlett Packard/Compaq as a safeguard in case your Recovery DVD fails.
