I did have problems with Vista SP1 on X86 32 bit - I found that simply unplugging the speakers from the rear of the pc sound card sockets and then plugging it back in brought up the Realtek High Definition output socket configuration utility. Once the speakers were remapped as appropriate (in my case "Front speakers") the sound worked immediately. I have also upgraded to Realtek High Def driver version R1.89 before installing Vista SP1.
