Vista - Winmail cannot choose email recipient

Hi,
New PC for wife, she is not impressed with Vista!
The main problem is email - Vista does not run Outlook 2000, so tried Windows Mail. It works like Outlook Express, but when I try to select an email recipient error 'unable to choose a recipient' appears. Google reveals a number of causes including KB933928, which I have removed, with no success.
Does anyone know more, marital harmony is threatened.....?
