The problem may be that as you are using Vista as os, you will have on board Word 2007 which saves it's .doc files as .docx, and may not recognise a .doc file for what it is.
You need a .doc to .docx converter such as the Microsoft OMPN (office migration planning manager) which you can download free from http://microsoft.com/office/ork
