cannot open .doc attachments

HI
Whenever I try to open a .doc in an email attachment in either Hotmail or Windows Mail I get.
-File does not have a program associated with it for performing this action create an association in the set associations control panel.-
When I go to Vista control panel associate a file type .doc is already associated with Word.
Advise please
