Just to let you know all is well at this end.
Restored System back to original DVD backup.

Importantly, the Windows Update is working fine now and all '45MB' of downloads installed without a hitch. Time will tell if future Updates are installed OK.

Thanks again for your invaluable help. Your knowledge of Operating Systems, in particular the Vista family is a God send to us that are used to 'dated' ones.

I personally use XP Pro I, but the future beckons and will try the new Vienna OS when it's rolled out in the near future. I'm sure myself and others will pick your brains in the future.
