Help with MSN Messenger

Hi All,
I've got 2 questions:-
Without using the mouse, what keys do you use to get different faces and other things? I happened to find out when I typed :-) & :-( I got

I'm only asking, because I find it hard moving from keyboard to mouse because of being disabled.Someone has asked me why MSN Messenger is free to use and I couldn't answer. Does anyone know why Microsoft offers this service for free?
