Limited or no connectivity/Acquiring network address

Hi

I am currently using a laptop operating on XP (about 5years old), and am attempting to install and use wireless internet on it. I have previously used a wireless card on this computer however something went wrong and it broke but as the hub was in my room I was just able to use a cable instead. I moved a few months ago and the hub is in the hall next to the front door and not a convenient place to go and plug in at all!

I have now installed a wireless USB adapter from Edimax. This is all up and running to the stage where it detects the wireless network in the house (there are two PCs upstairs using it with no problems), I key in the network code to access it etc and the signal strength is detected as very good. It then goes to acquiring network key which it seems unable to do and this results in a message saying "Limited or no connectivity. You might not be able to access the internet or some network resources. For more information click here." I do that click repair and that disables and enables etc and that doesn't work!

I've tried that several times, I've also tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times. The computer under the settings etc thinks the USB adapter is working normally, my brother talked me through the PING dos strategy to look things there and that seems to be okay for both possibilities he said. There doesn't seem to be a Default gateway if that's any help when its doing the acquiring network thing.

I'm really at a loss and so frustrated. I've spent hours on this and would really love some help. Thankyou - I hope!
