Sharing broadband

A frined of mine wants to set up a wireless network so he can use a laptop downstairs. His main PC is upstairs, connected to broadband. He doesn't want to leave it switched on all the time so I suggested he gets something like this with this for his laptop and this for his desktop.

Is this right?

A couple of questions to add.

1. Does it need to be a modem with router? Wouldn't the supplied modem work, with the router plugged in from the modem?

2. If he decided he wanted to be able to share files and the internet with his desktop, would a ruter plugged into the desktop be sufficient, with the PC card for his laptop?

Thanks
