Transferring files from Win 98SE to XP Pro . What is the best method?

Lots of questions ( this is something I have never done before)
I am taking delivery of an HP dx2000 computer with Xp Pro preloaded I intend to transfer the Personal files of my friends old but still works somehow 600mhz computer with Win 98SE New computer has a 2.8 P4 chip (and I'm adding some more RAM )
Has anybody got any Ideas on what I require to transfer all the files across regarding cables, cards, connections ect.
And if any what Issues could arise?
And if I can activate it will the Remote Desktop Connection (on the XP machine) be of any use?
Or do I go Via the HyperTerminal program (Telnet) route (and how is that set up if applicable?)
Or can I simply slot the 98 hard drive as a "Slave" on the XP machine and drag and drop the files folders Into the "Shared Folders file" if it exists on a single user machine or directly into the Users Account?
PS Can the Hyperterminal Program work between 2 linked hard drives on the same computer if the original OS's are different? Or is that impossible?
Thanks in Advance.
