How can you tell if someone is "hijacking" wireless?

Is it possible to know if someone is "hijacking" your wireless connection? Theres up to 5 wireless networks near me and not all are security enabled. I've not attempted to do so as have read in posts it is illegal, but am concerned that when I am set up and (hopefully) secure this could happen to me. Can you notice a reduction in speed or is there software which will alert you??
Any info appreciated.
