how long ago did it start running slow ?
did it happen all of a sudden, after you installed a program maybe.
try running sfc \scannow
to see if any system files are missing.
put your XP disc in the drive.
click on START\RUN and type CMD into the address bar and click OK.
At the DOS PROMPT type SFC /SCANNOW. note the space between SFC and /SCANNOW. hit enter.
