My only other suggestion is that when CS2 firdt came out, it was styled version 9.0.0 and was very buggy.
The bugs were sorted in an updated version 9.0.2.
Is it possible that when you installed on the XP machine, you made that update and hence the prog is working, but that when you installed on the Vista machine, you did not get that update ?
Such update may not be on the installation disc, and you may have to go online via the Adobe Updater service, download and install that update.
