MSN messenger download

I am trying to download MSN, but keep getting directed to account verification page, where I have to send a text message ( costing £6 ! ) to get verification number. I have tried downloading an earlier version, but it won't let me log on without upgrading to newer version. Is this not free anymore ? I am using Vista Premium. Thanks.
