Scanned PDF document too big to email

When I download a PDF document it takes only a few minutes but when I scanned four pages into a PDF document the file size was 6.5 MB - far too big to send by email on my dial-up. I scanned at 75 dpi and tried to compress it but it was unreadable. Can anyone tell me how to make a PDF document file small enough to email in dial-up? I'm not sure if I'm in the best forum for this query.
