change e-mail system and address?

A friend has asked me if she can use Outlook Express instead of AOL Her husband has the account with AOL and her computer runs off his connection . They are both using Windows XP Home and her e-mail address is -----@AOL .com . Her husband is reluctant to change because he dislikes change (!), so can my friend use Outlook Express for her mail and would she have to use a different address? Would this interfere with the husbands connection with AOL? Very grateful for any help that you can give.
