You're certainly not on your own. I like the full control I get over a page by creating it in HTML but would agree that it's long winded. I use Crimson Editor - a free text editor that colours HTML code so it stands out. It also allows you to make changes to a number of files at a time.

Although sites with a lot of pages take a long time to create you can cut down on the time spent by using your other pages as templates. The more you learn about HTML, the easier and quicker that becomes.
