Sharing Internet on PC and Laptop

Due to action replay not working on Vista (my home pc with internet) I want to use it on my xp laptop. I have a broadband connection through a virgin media set top box. When i plug it in it says there is no connection. I have tried the start.ntl.com but it says it can not open the search page. I cant think of what to do.
Please help.
