Virgin Media and IE

Just switched from my old dial up account with AOL to Virgin Media using ADSL and when I visit certain sites using Internet Explorer I find that where there should be an image it is a blank square with a red cross in the upper left hand corner.
I had never experienced this before when using AOL can anybody help me to get rid of this problem please.
