On Windows 98 in the "Windows" folder in the main hard drive there is a folder called "Temp". This folder appears to be taking up a lot of space (over 3GB). Could someone please tell me what it is for and if I can delete any/all of the files in Temp folder. I first thought this folder was for temporary files, but, when I run Disk Cleanup it says 0.00Mb for temporary files.

I am a totally brand new silversurfer, bought computor 6weeks ago, havnt a clue as yet.A friend of my son installed everything, showed me the basics. Now Ive ran into one major problem that has instilled panic.Friend said he is coming back to help, but hes a busy lad. I have WindowsXP but its the DVD I have the problem with. Making a first attempt to play one, nothing happened. In a blind panic I started fiddling about, and believe somehow I have removed the capability from the system. My man gave me four alternatives to restore, including system restore,by going back in time but no joy.Have I done total damage? will it cost me a bomb to restore. Please someone help me. In addition to panic, also irritation,in the last few day BT keeping asking me to redial virtually every half hour.Dialled in only once upto this week.3rd and promise its the last one, what is this tiny icon that appears from time to time at the bottom right hand corner, a little 'no entry' sign and I'm looking at it now,Privacy Report.

Hi George-don't panic- first of all you should go into start, program etc - to accessories hopefully you have PowerDVD installed or a similar dvd player- if you see it, click on it and your dvd disc will then be playable, have fun- bt asking you to redial every half a hour is par for the course especially in the evenings when everyone logs on- bt then cuts people off and you end up reconnecting- don't know about your no entry icon.

Thanks Hugh for a speedy response, unfortunately that's part one of problem,Power DVD is no longer listed in accs. You cured one headache anyway about BT.I read a few horror stories that frightened me. The icon, its not there all the time, only on certain sites, its popped up again.

George, Go to Start | Search | Files and Folders and type in Cyberlink. I would imagine that it is in the C drive\Program Files.
Open it up and you should find PowerDVD in there.

Right Click on the icon, and then click Send to. Now click Desktop.

When you go back to your desktop, you should now have the PowerDVD icon back on there. If you double click on that, your DVD player should now start

Your best bet would be to wander round a computer fair and see what people are charging there for, and then deduct about 20%. Alternatively have a look on the auctions sites like e-bay

I hadn't used my Mustek 600 scanner in months, but now when I try to acquire an image the TWAIN program keeps causing an invalid page fault in KERNEL32.DLL (I use Windows 98). It doesn't seem to matter which graphics program I use to acquire the image (I've tried using Ulead Photo Express and MGI PhotoSuite). I have re-installed the scanner software but to no avail. Do you have the "Search within subfolders" check box selected in the search window that comes up? If you don't do this then it will only search the top level of the directory, but not within any of the subdirectories. This may be why you aren't getting any of the results you're looking for.

Which version of windows have you got on your system? If it is Windows 95 OSR2, 98 or Me, you can get a USB PCI card from most good computer hardware retailers for about £15. If you are running Windows 95 and are not sure which version it is, right click you "My computer" icon and click properties. It is displayed on the General tab.

My HP Pavilion currently uses a Pentium 2 derivative Celeron processor and I would like to upgrade to something faster. I would guess that at present I have about 266/300Mhz (how do I check this?). Web sites such as PC World sell processors from £40 upwards that appear to be much faster. But other than speed and price, how do I choose which one to go for (eg "socket 370" or not, Celeron or Pentium)? Given that I have added RAM myself but would not fancy trying anything much more complicated do you think this is something I could do myself or would you recommend I leave this to the experts. Your major concern, unfortunately, is not just the CPU that you intend to install, but your Motherboard (mobo).
You will need to find out what mobo is installed to find out it's maximum capabilities. If you already know and you have the manual handy, in the specifications should be the details as to what it IS capable of.

If you are not sure what Mobo is inside your machine, Go to Belarc and download the 797kb freeware program. It will tell you everything you need to know about the inside of your computer. Post back with the details

Your main concern would have been whether your BIOS would support large hard drives. As it highly likely that your computer was manufactured after 1998, then you should have no problems.
Backwards compatibility is not an issue. The one thing that you will need to do though is to update you IDE BUS controller driver, and you will find that readily available from your motherboard manfacturer. One other thing you might want to do is "Slave" the new drive to your existing drive, thus saving you the hassle of re-installing Windows.

One word of advice though, partition the hard drive into smaller "drives". It will give you greater access speed than one big drive and enable you to save data and files in separate locations. It will save you a lot of time in the event of a re-format, losing you only a small amount of info. Disc maintenance such as defragging also takes less time.

Take the Black ink cartridge out, and give it a really good shake, making sure that you wrap it in a rag (or something) to make sure the ink doesn't splash everywhere!. Wipe the bottom of the cartridge.
Ink can crystallise if left standing for any length of time. When buying ink cartridges ALWAYS check the sell by date.

To access the ink cartridges, open the lid on the tractor section, and press the button which has what looks like ink drops on for three or more seconds. On Epsons, it is usually the button on the extreme left.

Hello,
You dont say if it occurs with any other programmes, if it is just Powerpoint then she could un-install it, and then reboot, then re-install it. Check for any conflicts also, especially if it is happens with other programmes.
Usually what happens, is that there is a conflict with the communication ports (COMM PORTS), sometimes, its IRQ, and sometimes it is Memory Addressing, that is at fault.
It might be an idea to search for the latest mouse drivers for your mouse as well, because although ME supports the mouse by default, in most cases it is only a generic driver that is used.
Hope that helps!

First time caller , love the show. I have recently had a faulty hard disc replaced. Since then I have been unable to use the Disc Doctor function of Nortons Utillity , Windows Scandisc or Windows System Restore. Disc Doctor tells me that it cannot repair the DOS Boot record and will not continue with the scan. Windows Scandisc restarts its process 10 times before telling me that Windows or another program is writing to the drive. Windows System Restore simply will not return the disc to an earlier check point. Does anyone think that these problems may be connected in some way - any suggested solution much appreciated. My operating system is ME.

Welcome to the web-user site. :) Let's hope we can help you.
If you've recently had ME re-installed, it is highly likely it is missing the System Restore patch that Micro$oft kindly released, Go to the Windows update site, (Click Start | Windows update). That should repair that issue.

The scan disc issue should be solved if you first close all programs runnning in the background by using CTRL-ALT-DEL and end task for everything except Explorer and Systray. Make sure that your antivirus and firewall is off. If this doesn't work, trying doing a scandisk in Safe Mode, by rebooting your computer and pressing F8 at startup.

For the Norton problem, I suggest you visit the Symantec website and have a search for available patches.

Good luck!

Many thanks for your advice yesterady which has sorted out my Windows problems. I have found reference to my Norton error message on the Symantec support web site. One of the proposed solution is to run the DOS utility FDISK -this comes wrapped in a strong note of caution about the potentially catastrophic consequences of improper use of FDISK. Any ideas where I might be able to get the utility and any advice about its use ? Lastly, how do I found out if my drive is using Dynamic Drive Overlay ? Thanks for levelling out this steep learning curve.
daniel - northampton - Fri Apr 12 22:34 2002

Daniel, to be honest, and please don't take this the wrong way, if you don't know what DDO is, you probably aren't using it. Dynamic Drive Overlay (DDO) is a method of compressing the hard drive to free up disk space. The most commonly used method of doing this is with a Utility in your Programs | Accessories | System Tools called DriveSpace. If you want to know more, then have a look at this site.
I would be very wary of using Fdisk without guidance, if you would like me to have look at the Norton instructions, please post back the web address. :)
Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Sat Apr 13 12:11 2002
reply

Daniel, I have been doing some further research, and I have now come to the conclusion that the Fdisk command Norton was referring to is fdisk /mbr (note the space) What is possible is that there was a resident master boot virus, harmless but nevertheless annoying.
You will need a boot disk from an uninfected source. If you go to Dr D's and click the Boot Disk link at the top. Download the disk for ME and save to disk.

Once downloaded, use a new disk and install the contents onto the disk by double clicking it.

Leave the disk in, and restart your computer. Hopefully, your floppy disk drive is the primary boot source, and a menu should appear, choose the option to start the computer without cdrom support.

When the a: > appears, type in fdisk /mbr This will rewrite the Master Boot Record. Take the disk out and Reboot your computer. Note:If your computer has more than 4 (four) partitions or you have a dual boot system, (ie running Millenium and another operating system) don't attempt this, you will lose everything

Thanks for this Iain. No luck so far in rewriting the Master Boot Record. When I enter fdisk /mbr , the set up defaults straight back to A:\> Any ideas ? Clear out your Temporary Internet Folders

I am hoping to buy an adsl usb modem for my laptop. unfortunately, my laptop has no usb port. i know that you can buy usb - serial adapters, my question is - are these backwards compatible so you can plug them into a vacant serial port and then a usb device into the other end so you are really connecting a usb device to a serial port. also, if this is possible, what is the speed/reliability of using these and how much should i expect to pay for a standard one? cheers leigh duffy (worldxtremewrestling@hotpop.com) i would appreciate it if you could help me by contacting me on the address above thanks again
