MAC to PC

Hi all,
I have a Mac Laptop which I have recently had to put a new HDD as the old one died on me. I also have a PC which I am far more familiar with.
Is there anyway I can view the information from my Mac HDD on my PC? I currently have a SATA to IDE converter so that I can hook it all up but for some reason the PC isn't seeing the Mac HDD. Just wondered if it is an incompatiblity problem.
I can hear the laptop is starting up and sounds fine but can't see it show up as a HDD.
