key board locks up computer

When I boot up my computer all is ok until I hit any key on the keyboard. When I hit a key the computer freezes I lose all mouse and keyboard functions (crashes). Also if I restart the numLock light stays on and only goes off if I completly power down. Can't start in safe mose as it needs keyboard input. System is running XP Home with all latest updates.
