Mark2 Here is my complete ‘arsenal’ of weapons dealing with USB (Universal Serial Bus aka Unreliable Serial Bus) problems. Some you may have tried, some overlap between not responding and not recognised and some may be irrelevant to your problem: Have a look at USB troubleshooting tips here http://www.uwe-sieber.de/usbstick_e.html ERROR CODE 10 DEVICE CANNOT START Have a look here http://www.pchell.com/hardware/usbcode10.shtml USB NOT RESPONDING 1. Unplug all USB devices except hubs and, if you have them, the mouse and keyboard then boot Windows in Safe Mode (tap F8 at switch on). 2. Right-click My Computer > Properties > Hardware Tab > Device Manager and look for everything in the USB Devices or Universal Serial Bus Controllers category then right-click and Uninstall them starting from the bottom (last one). 3. Restart the system and Windows will then re-install the USB controllers. Plug in your USB devices one at a time and they should be recognised properly. Note that some drivers may be needed if Windows can't find them in its own driver repository. USB HDD NOT RECOGNISED Not in any particularly logical sequence, here are a few things to try : 1. Right-click My Computer > Properties > Hardware Tab > Device Manager to see if the drive shows up under ‘Disk drives‘. If so, right-click it > Properties > Policies Tab and check if you have a ‘Quick Removable’ check box. A USB external drive should have a check in this box. Reboot if you’ve changed anything. 2. Try restarting the computer with the USB drive already plugged in and powered up. 3. Try an ‘Autoplay’ repair, here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/detai...amp;Hash=LJ6SCR 4. Right-click My Computer > Manage > Disk Management. If the disk is listed or hidden, right-click its graphic and change the drive letter to one nearer the end of the alphabet. 5. Control Panel > Add new hardware and let the wizard find it. 6. Check in Device Manager (expand USB) to see if you have Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller (exact wording). If so, right-click it and Disable it. |
