Identical OS on two partitions

In trying to re-insall Windows XP Home Edition after a crash, I have managed to create a partition on which it is now installed for a second time. So when I now boot up, I'm asked which version I want to use. How do I delete one of the partitions and all its contents? When I try to do this in explorer I'm blocked because of the usual 'read only' or 'sharing violation' warnings. I want to delete the one that's a tiny partition (c:drive) and keep the one on a much larger partition (d:drive). To my knowledge, d: is the new installation.
