PC Suddenly Emitting High Pitched Alarm Tone!

Can anyone advise me what's going on with my PC please?
It has just started emitting a high pitched 2 tone alarm screech. The sound is coming from the PC itself, not through the speakers which are switched off.
No alert windows have popped up and nothing else untoward appears to have happened. There are no warning boxes or symbols in the little bar next to the clock...
Any advice would be gratefully received. Thanks!
