Thanks for your advice too Jonny. No, my dad doesn't have call waiting/1571 on his phone. He seems to be ok with getting connected to Virgin now (phew!). At 77 years young, he's only just joined the "net" and although he won't admit it, I'm sure he fiddles about here and there ("I've not touched anything", he says!), but I've been able to sort out any other problems he's had!!
