my microsoft updates are refusing to install.
They arrive as normal, I click to install, installation is initialised, then, they fail, with no explanation. I have firefox as brower, is that the problem? Any ideas?

Hi Kitwiz , could you tell us what updates are failing and the error codes.
Go to the windows update site ( or open Internet Explore click on tools > windows update ) . When the site loads look in the left hand pane and click on "review your update history". Your failed updates will show a red cross under the staus heading. Click on the cross to get further help , or , let us know the error code and the name of the update/s that are failing.

They are mostly updates for office 2003.
Update for Outlook 2003 KB943649
Update for Outlook Junk email filter 2003KB943591
These 2 have been trying to install since 23rd Jan!!!
Security update for office word 2003 KB943983
Update for Outlook junk email filter KB944941
Security update for MS office suite 2005 KB943973
for publisher KB946254
for office KB945185
Updates for XP are installing ok
Any help appreciated

Start with these two : Update for Outlook 2003 KB943649
Update for Outlook Junk email filter 2003KB943591
Seems the fix for this is to use the Outlook/office CD to repair the installation then download the updates. Here's hoping you have the CD.

Security update for office word 2003 KB943983.
You must have Microsoft Office 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) installed to apply this security update , do you have this ?

Regarding service pack 2, do you mean XP SP2 ?
