I'm having a problem with the CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive on a 2nd hand comp I got recently from a friend who'd upgraded. It keeps disconneting while reading certain disks. Also it won't recongnise many of my music disks. It says the drive is empty when it isn't. It's always the same disks but the music disks I know are fine. I presume the other are too.
The comp was restored/reinstalled using the manfacurer's software (Time) before it was given to me (to erase all my friend files etc.) so I suspect a bad driver or something simmilar as my friend had no problems.
However I don't have the internet at home (surfing using library computer) so cannot use windows update. I have also been unable to find a xp driver for the drive.
Can anyone give any suggestions? The comp was built in 2002 (xp home) so this is the date of all the software. The drive is LG model gcc-4120b

These 4 error messages repeat over and over in my computer's error log. The first one repeats many, many times (on one day 24 times).
Source Description
atapi The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort1, did not respond within the timeout period. PlugPlayManager The device HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4120B (IDE\CdRomHL-DT-SL_RW/DVD_GCC- 4120B 2.01\5&c21666e&0&0.1.0) disappeared from the system without first being prepared for removal. Cdrom The device, \Device\CdRom0, has a bad block. atapi The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\Ideport1.
Hopefully someone knows what this means and can sugest a solution.

It probably means you've got a 6 year old CD drive which has reached the end of its useful life. I would invest in a new one.
