Sound Recorder won't work on my new Acer T180 desktop. There is no response to my microphone. Under Recording Control (under Volume under Sounds and Audio Devices) MIC is grayed out. It is not grayed out on my old laptop, where microphone recordings have been working well for years on XP! Why is it grayed out? Is this a defect in the system? It seems clear MIC should not be grayed out? How do i ungray it?

Sounds like XP isn't detecting your microphone. What sort of microphone is it? And is it definately in Line-In/Mic socket on your PCs sound card?

It is the IBM Voice Recognition mike that has worked well with Windows XP on my laptop (where, incidentally, the MIC Recording and the LINE recording level sliders are NOT grayed out - and yes, it is in the corect mike slot on the computer. The computer recognises that something has been plugged into the mike hole but no sound reaches the Voice Recorder. It seems to me that i have been sold a computer wih a serious software defect! Thanks for your response
