Hi
I want to format my hard drive but I have lost my Win Xp home OEM disk.
I still have the license key and certificate etc but when I borrowed an XP disk from my mate the license key wasn't recognided, and then someone told me that the license key is unique to that version of XP home OEM and to use the key I would need to get a disk that has the same version of XP as that one on the disk that was lost ??
The computer was bought in Dec 2002
Does anyone know how to find out what version of XP I would need and does anyone know how to find this info out by using the information from my license key, ( as you can understand I don;i want to post the key on the net ).
Cheers Dave

As you are using an OEM version of XP the CD and key are indeed specific to your own PC. Can you go back to the manufacturer of the PC and ask for a copy of the CD?

Hi
Thanks for getting back to me.

Hi, it shouldnt matter if its OEM as long as your key is genuine. All you should need is any windows xp instalation disk and you windows key. My advice would be to contact microsoft and speak to one of their tech bods. Even though its OEM they can be very helpful and as your having problems validating your key i would definatly give them a try. Hope this helps The_DADDY

He's already tried that with a mate's CD and it didn't recognise the key. All the same, Microsoft might help, it has been known! Madeline.

I know its unlikely but perhaps he typed it in wrong. As for microsoft helping, my licence is OEM but my pc has been upgraded along the way to the point where there are no original parts. Yet i was still able to get some tech help (and reinstal windows a number of times in the past with just an XP disk even though my pc came with a red recovery disk) from the big m a few months ago and i did make them aware that i had healivly upgraded. I did expect them to say 'on yer bike mate' but to my supprise and their credit nothing could have been further from the truth and my issue was sorted quite quickly The_DADDY

Please let us know how you get on with MS. Hopefully, The_DADDY's right and they'll help you. After all, you won't be the first person who's ever lost their CD. Good luck with it! Madeline.

That's very encouraging to know. I've often wondered what would happen if I had to replace/upgrade parts of my PC with only an OEM version of XP. I feel quite optimistic about it now! Madeline.

Well I spoke to MS they checked my serial number,to check it was genuine ( which it is ) and they then offered to replace my copy of XP for the latest version for £16.00 as they said the OEM version I have is very out dated and do not supply that version anymore.
Pretty good of MS really cos they could have told me where to go, just incase anyone else needs to contact Microsoft their number is Microsoft Direct Services on 0800 032 4479
Thanks for all your help though
Cheers Dave

That is a very useful piece of information. Like the man said, £16 for a brand new Windows XP CD is a bargain.

Glad you've got it sorted, Dave. It sounds pretty fair to me and £16 for the latest version can't be bad! Madeline.

I have the same problem and have phoned the microsoft number given. Woman on the end of phone was great, she is e-mailing me a form so I can get a replacement. This was after a different microsoft bod had told me I had to get a replacement from my PC manufacturer. This being JAL, they don't answer e-mails & there phone number is no longer recognised, are they still trading ?

There's a couple of problems with your post - first you've responded to a post that finished 18 months ago and second, the only JAL I've heard of are Japan Airlines. I presume it isn't them?
