Hi,
After a problem with win32:/virlog worm infecting all .exe files, we did a fresh install of windows xp on my mates pc. I chose to do a complete install, [not repair] on the same partitian that was already being used. As far as I'm aware, I chose options which would completely delete the existing files and operating system and put in a fresh installation of xp.
Then i installed AVG from my memory stick [created from a 'clean' pc]
Then we ran the virgin disk to connect to the internet. This brought up a virus warning - something like 'hazard win32 vir'
My question is - how can this be? Surely a fresh install would have completely wiped off everything that was there before, including the nasties.
Apart from this, the pc seems to be working ok - I do have one minor issue with the virgin disk, which boasts of being a 'flash' disk. yeah, very clever! The pc didn't have flash until its downloaded from the web - but can't download from the web til the disk is installed -but cannot use it properly as the flash buttons dont show up.
Anyhow - the computer has refused to allow the installation of microsoft office - comes up as a hazard on avg, so have installed open office instead.
Is it possible that the fresh installation HASN'T wiped off the previous nasties?

The only sure way when re-installing Windows is to use the option of deleting all existing partitions on the hard disk and then creating a brand new one in which to install the OS. Is that what you did? If you didn't then it is quite possible that infections may remain.

No - I didn't delete the partition - mainly because I knew i would have to create a new one, and have no idea how.
So far the pc is behaving itself. I'll get my friend to run a virus scan asap - and see what it finds.

Without deleting the partition you can't be sure you've cleaned the PC properly. It's quite simple really, just follow the prompts given by the Windows installer and it will ask you if you wish to create a new partition and format it using NTFS.

Thanks - I will certainly give that a go, if necessary - having finally got the pc up and running again, i'm not sure she'll want me to do yet another install.
[She's learning fast, btw - having had to download and install vital plugins all by herself - such as adobe acrobat reader, shockwave player and flashplayer. - She might even be able to do it all herself next time.]
