Yesterday, I installed the free edition of AVG (which I've used before with no probs) plus Zone Alarm and Spybot Search & Destroy).
This morning when I switched on my computer it wouldn't initialize (just a black screen). I had to switch it off by keeping my finger pressed on the start button. When it came back on again I got a black screen with a long message which I actually didn't finish reading before it 'initialized' (I assume that's what it did!) and eventually I got everything back on as it should be.
I remember the words 'Safe Mode' and 'Safe Mode with Network...' but that's all!
Any ideas as to what might have happened? I'm frightened to switch the machine off this evening in case I don't ever get it to work again!
I've been using Norton the past 12 months with no probs but couldn't afford the subs this year so decided on the free versions of AVG etc.

Could i ask you when you uninstalled Norton.

Hi! I uninstalled Norton on Tuesday then immediately after installed AVG free edition, Spybot S&D and Zone Alarm

pootertooter , have to admit it's just a hunch and there's nothing technical about my answer , but , I'm thinking it could be some conflict with Zone Alarm and Norton. Now i know you've uninstalled Norton , but , i suspect it's by the normal manner ,add/remove programs . Usually when using this method it tends to leave bit's and pieces behind.
If you haven't done so already try downloading and running the... Norton removal tool...which will remove all traces of the programme.
May help , may not , but you've nothing to lose by giving it a bash.
