No sounds after loading XP Pro
      #319833 - Thu Dec 07 2006 12:04 AM

After installing Windows XP Pro on a relatives PC I have been unable to have any sound. Prior to this sounds were OK. When I go to Sounds and Audio Device Properties in the Control Panel under the Audio Tab the default device shown is Line #0 Modem....there are no other options from the drop down menu.
There is no sound card installed on the Motherboard so when sounds were available prior to the XP installation I assume they must have been derived from an onboard system. Any ideas or suggestions as to what is wrong? Any suggestions gratefully received.

Try checking the BIOS, first. If there is an onboard AND secondary sound card, make sure onboard is disabled. If no sound card, make sure onboard is enabled. Hope it helps.

Hi Doc-Hoof,
Many thanks for the reply. The mystery deepens further though. I've checked the BIOS twice and can't find any reference to an onboard sound system. The only likley option appears to be one called audio which has an auto detect with the option to disable the function!! I've left it on auto detect and disabled it - all to no avail.

Sounds like the PC has an onboard sound chip rather than separate sound card. Go here and install SIW. Use that to identify your motherboard and audio chip and we can find the right drivers.

Many thanks greysts. I won't have a chance to try it this weekend but will follow your instructions and the link as soon as possible.
Thank you again.
