Windows XP Counterfeit
      #283023 - Wed May 24 2006 08:45 AM

I've been reading a previous post about this but as that post is locked I've stared a new one. The very same thing has happened to me but in my case I have the receipt from the computer shop where I bought XP and had it installed, I also have the product key on the front of my PC tower. The only reason I can think that this has happened for is that I had to have major work done on my PC last year and all software had to be re-installed. I can't shift the yellow shield icon or the star shaped icon at the bottom right of the screen and the balloons just keep on popping up with messages saying my copy is counterfeit...well I damn well know it ISN'T. Anyway I've emailed Microsoft and am awaiting their reply so I'll keep you all posted as to what happens next.
It's very worrying, I certainly can't afford to pay again and really don't see why I should when I've done nothing wrong.

Have you spoken to the shop in question? Even shops can unwittingly purchase counterfeit goods.

Gee thanks for the sympathy, I most certainly have spoken to the shop where I bought it and yes my copy of XP is genuine, yes their reputation is intact...but Microsoft had made a mistake! The shop have sorted it all out for me (phoning Microsoft within my hearing so I know it's all above board) and all is now restored to working order.
So if it happens to YOU and you are a legal owner of a genuine licence don't give up without a fight!

Do you know what they did exactly?

Did M$ push a button at their end to authenticate it?

No they didn't push a button, they gave the shop a validation code which once windows had been reloaded was enough to put everything right. I might add that I'd already phoned microsoft myself three times and spoken to three different people, two of whom were extremely unhelpful . When the shop rang for me they too had an awful battle on their hands until they insisted on speaking to a suprvisor, then it got worse..the supervisor tried to say the shop wasn't a recognised dealer in microsoft licenced goods. The owner of the shop was called and he got on the phone to sort that one out. He also showed me proof that he had bought the licences for a number of microsoft goods for resale, going so far as to show me the invoice.
Through all this microsoft has come over as most inefficient and the operatives at the call centres badly lacking in knowledge and customer service skills.

Thankfully it hasn't cost me anything but I wouldn't mind betting there are people buying keys etc to validate copies that aren't even counterfeit.

Great stuff Doc. Nice to see the little guy take on the big wiggs and come out on top for once.

Good for you! It just goes to show that you have to persevere when you know that you're in the right. Unfortunately, a lot of people will just cave in when faced with the overbearing arrogance of a big corporation, but you didn't. Well done!

Thanks, I'm normally quite a shy person but things like that really get my back up and I wouldn't have let it drop, not when I knew I'd done nothing wrong.

I've heard over the weekend of at least three people just either putting up with the notices popping up or using bypass advice from the Internet, not sure if all their copies are genuine or not though.

You're welcome. It's a horrible thing to happen. It would be good if there was some way a retailer could check to see if a disc is genuine before it's sold.

When I discovered I had purchased a counterfeit copy off of eBay (at $79), I contacted Microsoft about what was needed to make it legal. They said, "You must purchase another copy." There was no wiggle, no help from Microsoft. I purchased two copies of XP from Walmart at the same time in July 2005. One copy was fine and reported back as genuine. The other was not a genuine copy as reported back from Microsoft. Upon contacting Microsoft about the problem, they just said to go back to Walmart to resolve the problem. In other words, someone used my codec to register their illegal copy. How they broke the code is beyond me; however, Microsoft will do nothing at all to assist in this type of matter. Just buy another copy is their stance. Hope you have better luck with Microsoft than myself!

I didn't get much sympathy at all from microsoft, as stated in my previous post I tried three times to get some sense out of them but got nowhere. Not being unkind but I could hardly even understand what they were saying.....

Thankfully the shop where I bought it sorted it for me but I live in dread of having to reload Windows for any reason as I'm not confident that it would all go smoothly.

I think someone must have made an awful lot of extra profit on all these extra copies that people have been told to buy.
