Sounds like your defragmenter is opening with the wrong program. Try this to see if it works.

Right click your defragmenter icon, select open with, click choose program, select "microsoft management console" or browse to mmc.exe in windows/system32 if it isnt in the list and place a tick in the box "always use the selected program"

If you can't get the Windows Defragmenter to work, you could try the free edition of Diskeeper Lite, the Windows Defragmenter is based on Diskeeper anyway. You can download Diskeeper Lite here

Try seeing if defragmenter runs from run command go to start, run then type dfrg.msc

If that doesnt work try installing the disk defragmenter again

Click Start, Run, type C:\Windows\Inf and then click OK. Find the dfrg.inf file, and then right click and Install.

your possibley missing a snap in - start-run type mmc then enter now console1 will open click file choose add/remove snap in from dropdown menu, click add bottom left then a box to the right will open then browse to defrag icon before this you could install disckeeper lite from majorgeeks its the best defragger around very fast then at the browsw stage navigate to the disckeeper lite shortcut on your desktop. this might not help but its worth a try

There's a link to Diskeeper Lite in my post above. If you can't get the Windows one to work, surely it's worth a try?
